ROD LAVER Arena fell silent on Saturday afternoon with players, officials and spectators asked to observe a minute’s silence as a tribute to those who lost their lives in Melbourne’s CBD on Friday.

“You were innocent. You won’t be forgotten” was projected across the screens which surround the blue courts of Melbourne Park’s biggest arena, acknowledging the four people killed on Bourke Street.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives following the recent tragic events in the city of Melbourne, we would ask you to join the players and officials here on Rod Laver Arena to observe a moment’s silence,” an announcer said to those in the arena.

Both Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev were on court ahead of their third round clash, and stood to pay their respects.

A 10-year-old girl and a 32-year-old woman, along with a 25-year-old and 33-year-old, tragically lost their lives after killer driver Dimitrious Gargasoulas used a car as a weapon during 20 minutes of carnage in the city’s CBD.

Twenty others were injured in the attack with many still in a critical condition.

Victims among the school holiday crowds in the city stood no chance as the stolen Holden Commodore mowed down anyone in its way.

The mayhem was brought to an end when Gargasoulas, 26, was shot in the arm by police.

He was under police guard last night in hospital as homicide squad detectives head a major inquiry into the tragedy.
